We are an independent non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (opens in new tab), a department of the United Kingdom government.

The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 (opens in a new tab) (the Gambling Act) to regulate commercial gambling in Great Britain in partnership with licensing authorities. We also regulate the National Lottery under the National Lottery etc. Act 1993 (opens in a new tab).

In order to carry out our regulatory functions and meet our legal responsibilities, we need to collect certain personal data and, when we do, we are a ‘data controller’ of that information for the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (opens in a new tab) (the GDPR) (which applies across the European Union including the United Kingdom), the Data Protection Act 2018 (opens in a new tab) (the Data Protection Act) which supplements GDPR, extends its application in the UK, and implements the Law Enforcement Directive (opens as a PDF) (which relates to processing personal data for law enforcement purposes) (the LED) in the UK.
